The UK Government has named the Marine Management Organisation as the Lead Environmental Regulator for the Port of Tyne’s £175 million Clean Energy Park, streamlining planning and environmental approvals for a project expected to create up to 12,000 jobs and contribute more than £5.6 billion to the local and national economy. The proposed Clean Energy Park will redevelop a 230-acre underused industrial site on the banks of the River Tyne, adding 400 metres of new deep-water quayside to create the port infrastructure required to support the development and maintenance of the North Sea offshore wind sector. The MMO will act as a single point of contact coordinating joined-up regulatory advice from the outset, with the Environment Agency and Natural England continuing as key advisors, enabling early identification and resolution of issues while maintaining environmental standards. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds described the project as a win-win for growth and nature, with the streamlined regulatory approach enabling faster delivery of clean energy and jobs without compromising environmental protection. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness framed the development as a significant step toward her ambition of doubling the number of green energy jobs in the region by 2035. MMO Chief Executive Elysia McCaffrey highlighted the project as a model for supporting sustainable economic growth while protecting the marine environment, with MMO’s coordinating role enabling clearer and more streamlined decision-making.
