Zhoushan has completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) methanol bunkering operation for a newly built vessel, marking another step in China’s alternative marine fuel infrastructure. On 27 June, the methanol bunkering tanker JIA CHEN 17 supplied 795 tonnes of methanol to the methanol dual-fuel container ship Maersk Flinders at Tsuneishi Group (Zhoushan) Shipbuilding. The operation took 5.5 hours to complete. The bunkering followed safety inspections covering hose connections, gas detection, emergency shutdown systems, firefighting equipment and personal protective measures before fuel transfer began. The operation made Zhoushan the second Chinese port, after Shanghai, capable of conducting routine ship-to-ship methanol bunkering. According to China Classification Society (CCS), only 15 ports worldwide currently offer methanol bunkering services. CCS supported the project by carrying out surveys throughout the construction of JIA CHEN 17. The society verified that the vessel’s methanol bunkering system complied with China’s Interim Regulation for Technical Requirements and Surveys of Methanol Bunkering Vessels (2025) and CCS’s Guidelines for Methanol Bunkering Vessels (2023). CCS said the successful operation expands Zhoushan’s green fuel supply capabilities and strengthens its role as a marine fuel distribution hub. The classification society added that it will continue developing technical standards and survey services for alternative marine fuels, including methanol, LNG, ammonia and hydrogen, as the shipping industry accelerates its decarbonisation efforts.
