Adani Enterprises Limited has agreed to pay $275m to settle a US government investigation into alleged violations of American sanctions against Iran, the Treasury Department announced on Monday. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the settlement covers 32 apparent violations linked to AEL’s purchases of liquefied petroleum gas between November 2023 and June 2025. The probe centred on LPG imports arranged through a Dubai-based supplier that claimed to be exporting Omani and Iraqi gas. OFAC said the supply was Iranian in origin. “Red flags should have put AEL on notice that the LPG actually originated from Iran,” the Treasury statement said. OFAC said AEL had cooperated with the investigation and agreed to additional nonmonetary remedial measures to strengthen sanctions compliance. Adani Enterprises confirmed the settlement in a stock exchange filing, saying the agreement was executed on May 14. OFAC used the case to issue a broader warning to energy buyers operating in high-risk regions. “This case also embodies the adage ‘if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is,'” OFAC said. “Buyers of energy products originating from high-risk regions are encouraged to closely scrutinize and deploy enhanced due diligence when presented with proposals offering prices significantly below prevailing market rates.” The settlement comes days after Adani agreed to pay a separate $18m civil settlement in a US court case linked to an alleged $250m scheme to bribe Indian government officials for solar energy contracts, without admitting guilt.
