File Image / Pixabay Oman has opened a temporary shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the IMO to allow safe passage for ships. The temporary corridor will be open to all vessels and will operate without any transit fees or tolls, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said in a social media post on Wednesday . Ships wishing to use the route must coordinate with the IMO and follow the coordinates issued by the organisation and relevant Omani authorities. Oman said the initiative reflects its responsibility towards the Strait of Hormuz and its importance to the global economy, as well as its commitment to international law and the law of the sea to ensure freedom of navigation through the waterway. The temporary corridor has been established in line with the outcomes of recent efforts involving the US and Iran aimed at supporting stability and maritime traffic in the region. According to the authority, vessels using the corridor must follow coordinates issued by the IMO and relevant Omani authorities. The US and Iran have agreed to a 60-day framework to reach a deal to end the conflict, but it remains unclear what arrangements for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be in place after the period expires.
