The Port of Long Beach has become the first US port to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) to support the development of small modular reactor (SMR) technology for the maritime sector. The agreement aims to advance the use of nuclear-powered commercial vessels, port infrastructure and other maritime assets. According to the Port, it is the first formal partnership between MARAD and a US seaport focused on preparing for the commercial deployment of nuclear-powered ships. The initiative builds on MARAD’s Request for Information, issued in May 2026, seeking industry input on the development of a US-built, commercially viable SMR for the country’s maritime transportation system. The agreement also complements the Port of Long Beach’s lease with BlueCore Energy Inc., which will assemble, test and store maritime power modules at the port. Under the partnership, the Port and MARAD will work with the US Coast Guard, the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop operational procedures, safety standards and inspection requirements for SMR-powered vessels calling at US ports. The agreement is non-binding and does not commit either party to funding, procurement decisions or the adoption of any specific technology. The Port of Long Beach said electricity demand is expected to increase significantly as it works toward its goal of doubling container throughput by 2050. The port currently handles around US$300 billion in cargo each year and supports approximately 2.7 million American jobs. It is also home to two MARAD Ready Reserve Force vessels and is one of 18 US Commercial Strategic Seaports, supporting military logistics and supply chain resilience during national emergencies.
