Image Credit: Grimaldi Shipping firm Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of its 14th pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) suitable for conversion to ammonia propulsion. The firm took delivery of the 9,800 CEU vessel, Grande Egitto , from China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu , it said in an announcement on Monday . The 220 m vessel is equipped with lithium batteries, shore power capability, solar panels and an air lubrication system. Its ‘ammonia-ready’ notation means the vessel has been designed to allow future conversion to run on ammonia propulsion. Several ships have been ordered and delivered with ammonia-ready or methanol-ready classifications as shipowners hedge against future fuel transitions. However, actual conversions to run on these fuels remain limited across the global fleet. The new vessel’s maiden voyage will begin next week on Grimaldi’s Asia-East Africa service.
