Classification society ABS has issued an approval in principle (AiP) for an offshore floating storage and injection unit (FSIU). The FSIU, which will be able to receive LCO2 transported in low-pressure conditions, store, and inject it into subsea wells at high pressure for permanent sequestration, was designed by Modec in partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). The unit eliminates the need for an onshore LCO2 receiving plant and pipeline to injection wells. It is engineered for a maximum CO2 injection capacity of 10 mtpa, with a minimum total tank storage capacity of 100,000 cu m. The FSIU will feature both tandem loading at the aft and simultaneous side-by-side loading at the midship port side, enabling flexible and efficient LCO2 transfer from LCO2 carriers. It will have up to 90,000 cu m capacity in tandem mode and up to 50,000 cu m in side-by-side. The hull was developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. At the same time, the mooring system incorporates a SOFEC external turret, allowing for dual loading operations as well as station keeping in a non-directional environment, which is often found in Southeast Asia. The FSIU will also be equipped with diesel engine generators integrated with a carbon capture system on the topside, minimising operational CO2 emissions. “While this FSIU is a new concept, each component of the unit is not necessarily new to Modec. All the utility systems are like what we do on FPSOs every day.
