FacebookTwitterEmailLinkedin UK MAIB has issued an investigation report into an incident where a general cargo ship and a bulk carrier collided in the German Bight in 2023, causing the cargo ship to sink and five of its seven crew members to die. At 0455 on 24 October 2023, a general cargo ship and a bulk carrier collided in the German Bight traffic separation scheme. The cargo ship sank quickly and five of the seven crew lost their lives. Before the collision, the bulk carrier was heading westbound in the traffic separation scheme and the cargo ship was heading northbound such that a risk of collision existed. The cargo ship was required by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS), 1972, as amended, to keep clear of the bulk carrier.
