FacebookTwitterEmailLinkedin The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) was extended to domestic maritime activity on 1 July 2026, creating new contractual and cost considerations for charterers and traders, according to Skuld. In his analysis, Ivan Serracin, Vice President, Claims, Lawyer, Skuld, said charterers should keep the UK ETS separate from the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime when planning fixtures and drafting contracts, as the regimes have different scopes, compliance mechanisms and settlement requirements. While charterers will not normally be directly responsible to UK regulators, the commercial costs of compliance may be passed down through the charter chain.
