Mitsui E&S Group has completed the factory acceptance test of what it describes as Japan’s first WinGD large marine engine capable of operating on methanol and conventional fuel. Mitsui E&S DU, a group company of Mitsui E&S, manufactured the DU-WinGD 6X82DF-M-1.0 LP-SCR engine. The unit is also the first WinGD large marine engine produced at the Mitsui E&S Tamano Works. Engine destined for four-vessel series The methanol dual-fuel engine will be installed on the first of four vessels under construction for a Japanese shipowner. Mitsui E&S did not disclose the identity of the shipowner or provide details about the vessels. The company said the use of green methanol could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the vessels’ operations. Mitsui E&S expands engine production Mitsui E&S expects demand for large marine engines to increase under the Japanese government’s Shipbuilding Industry Revitalization Roadmap. In response, the group is integrating operations at the Mitsui E&S Tamano Works and the Mitsui E&S DU Aioi facility. The initiative aims to improve production efficiency and expand large-engine manufacturing capacity. According to the company, producing the WinGD engine at Tamano was supported by its longstanding relationships with engine licensors WinGD and Everllence. The Tamano Works also has infrastructure for supplying several next-generation fuels. Combined with Mitsui E&S DU’s Aioi operations, the group has what it describes as Japan’s largest production capacity for large marine engines. Methanol engine marks production milestone Mitsui E&S described the successful test as an important milestone in the development of its marine engine manufacturing system.
