BOJ deputy governor Himino says more interest rate hikes likely in World Economy News 03/03/2026 Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino said on Monday the central bank is likely to continue raising interest rates, as it gradually shifts into a more neutral stance on monetary policy. Speaking at a meeting in Wakayama, Kansai, Himino said that underlying inflation was likely to rise towards the BOJ’s 2% in the future, noting that it currently remained short of the central bank’s target. He also noted that the BOJ’s rate hikes had limited impact on the Japanese economy so far. The central bank has hiked rates four times since early-2024, fishing them out of negative territory and to 0.75%. “The inflation gap remains slightly negative at present but is expected to approach zero in the future… while the Bank’s policy remains somewhat accommodative, it should gradually shift to a more neutral stance through moderate policy rate hikes,” Himino said. The central bank has largely maintained its stance that rates will rise as economic growth and inflation advance in tandem with its forecasts. But a recent batch of weak gross domestic product and inflation readings raised doubts over just how much headroom the bank had to hike. Most recently was Tokyo consumer price index data for February, which showed underlying inflation falling below the BOJ’s 2% annual target.
