Energy shock seen hitting Asia the most, followed by Europe and US: MS in Oil & Companies News 09/03/2026 A surge in oil prices will weigh most heavily on Asian economies, with Europe and the U.S. facing more moderate economic impacts, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley. In a note to clients, the bank said Asia remains particularly exposed due to its reliance on imported energy. “Asia is the region most exposed on growth due to its heavy reliance on imported energy,” Morgan Stanley wrote, estimating that “a sustained $10/bbl rise in oil prices is estimated to lower regional GDP growth by 20–30bp.” The bank added that inflationary effects across the region would likely remain manageable, noting a “region-wide CPI impact of roughly 0.4pp under full pass-through,” partly offset by subsidies and regulated pricing in some economies. By contrast, the impact in the U.S. is expected to be relatively contained. Morgan Stanley believes the oil shock would “lift headline inflation temporarily,” but historical experience suggests limited pass-through to core inflation. A sustained 10% rise in oil prices would add about 30 basis points to headline inflation over several months before fading. The bank also noted that the broader economic hit to U.S. growth would likely remain modest unless higher energy prices significantly weaken consumption or labor markets. Europe faces a more complex stagflationary dynamic. In the euro area, Morgan Stanley estimates a sustained $10 per barrel increase in oil prices would “reduce GDP by ~15bp while lifting inflation by ~40bp,” with effects spreading across several quarters. Overall, Morgan Stanley said the primary risk from the energy shock may be “increased volatility and uncertainty rather than a large growth shock.” Source: Investing.com 2026-03-09 hellenicshippingnews... window.___gcfg = {lang: 'en-US'}; (function(w, d, s) { function go(){ var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0], load = function(url, id) { if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.src = url; js.id = id; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }; load('//connect.facebook.net/en/all.js#xfbml=1', 'fbjssdk'); load('https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js', 'gplus1js'); load('//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js', 'tweetjs'); } if (w.addEventListener) { w.addEventListener("load", go, false); } else if (w.attachEvent) { w.attachEvent("onload",go); } }(window, document, 'script')); tweet Share
