Image Credit: IMO Turkey ’s Sea of Marmara ferry network could cut greenhouse gas emissions by 63% by 2050 by switching to a mix of hybrid and fully electric vessels, an IMO study found. The study assessed 67 Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax ferries operating across 26 ports, it said in a press release on Tuesday . The network carries around 25 million passengers and seven million vehicles each year. A fully electric fleet could cut emissions by 84% , while the reduction could reach 95% if Turkey’s power grid decarbonises in line with its 2053 net-zero target. The study found that both battery-electric and hybrid propulsion are technically feasible across the ferry operations assessed. A mix of the two was identified as the most suitable option when balancing emissions cuts and costs. The study found no major technical barriers to electrification, but said charging infrastructure, investment, grid connections and regulatory changes would be needed. GreenVoyage2050 and Türkiye’s transport ministry are now looking to develop a pilot project in the Sea of Marmara to test the technical and commercial case for ferry electrification.
