Image Credit: CMB.TECH Belgium -based maritime group CMB.TECH ’s first ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier has begun its maiden voyage to Australia . The vessel, Mineral Europa , is described as the world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Friday . Its entry into service marks another step in the deployment of ammonia as a marine fuel. Earlier this year, Exmar introduced an ammonia-fuelled oceangoing gas carrier, making Mineral Europa the first ammonia-powered vessel in the dry bulk segment. CMB.TECH said the vessel was the result of almost a decade of development work as the company seeks to expand the use of ammonia in shipping. The company expects 21 ammonia-powered vessels to join its fleet by 2029 . This includes 18 dry bulk carriers, one container vessel and two chemical tankers. Most of these ships are expected to be delivered within the next nine months . “Mineral Europa is the first of its kind, but many more will follow in the months and years ahead,” Alexander Saverys , CEO of CMB.TECH, said.
