IMO advances interim training for methanol and ammonia fuelled ships in International Shipping News 04/03/2026 The framework is expected to support the development of dedicated training programmes for crews operating ships using these alternative fuels. The IMO’s Sub-Committee Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) has completed the draft interim guidelines, outlining training requirements for seafarers serving on vessels powered by methanol and ammonia. The draft guidance, covering methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels and ammonia, has been agreed during the sub-committee’s latest session and will be forwarded in May for approval, according to an update from Lloyd’s Register. Delegates have also agreed on a structured work plan to develop further guidance addressing training needs linked to alternative fuels and emerging onboard technologies.
