However, it comes with its own set of hazards , pollution being one of those. Therefore, careful planning matters. A lapse in preparation can escalate quickly into a pollution incident, with consequences ranging from clean-up costs and Port State Control action to delays, arrest and significant financial and reputational loss. Data from the condition surveys carried out by the Club (2023-2025) highlight some common bunkering-related issues. Poor condition of save-alls and drip trays was flagged in over a fifth of applicable answers, while missing or unavailable bunkering procedures and checklists were flagged in more than one in ten. To address pollution-related risks during a bunkering operation, the Club has produced a set of two posters as follows: Pollution Prevention – Proactive Pre-Bunkering Checks   Pollution Prevention – Proactive Checks During & After Bunkering These posters draw on the Club's claims and condition survey experience and cover aspects pertaining to preparation before the transfer, vigilance during the operation, and correct post-bunkering checks. The posters are intended as a quick reference check, and should be used in conjunction with, and not in place of, the Member’s own procedures and checklists, and the applicable requirements of the Flag State and local port authority. The Club recommends that these posters are displayed prominently at the on board bunker stations. We trust Members find this guidance useful.
