Swiss dry bulk operator Nova Marine Carriers has cemented its position as one of the most active players in the resurgent handysize S&P market, acquiring its third handysize bulker since April as part of a strategic fleet expansion centred on Japanese-built tonnage. Its latest acquisition, the 25,000 dwt Lucky Trader (built 2011), was purchased for $11.6 m from Greece’s FGM Chartering. Although the oldest ship in Nova’s recent spree, the Lucky Trader adds capacity to a growing fleet already enhanced by two notable purchases in June: a three-year-old 38,000 dwt bulker from Danish shipowner Norden and a five-year-old sister ship from Japan’s Shoei Kisen. All three vessels hail from Japanese shipyards—Yamanishi Zosen, Minami Nippon, and Shimanami—bringing a combined investment of over $61m. Nova Marine’s handysize fleet now comprises 14 vessels with an average age of 14 years and a collective market value of approximately $260m, according to VesselsValue.
