Malaysian provider of subsea digital infrastructure solutions OMS Group has signed contracts with Norwegian shipbuilder and designer Ulstein for the design and construction of two cable laying vessels. This move underscores OMS’s commitment to meet the surging global demand for high-capacity submarine cable systems. The new vessels, scheduled to enter service in 2028, will be purpose-built to focus on sustainability and reduce carbon emissions. The vessels, designated Ulstein SX252, have been designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions and are 130 m long and 22 m wide, with a capacity of up to 6,500 tonnes of cable and accommodation for 75 people. The vessels feature two large cable tanks, two spare-cable tanks, and a hangar that encloses the cable deck. Above the hangar, a large open deck is available for ROVs and containers.
