MMI Daily Iron Ore Index Report April 23 2026 in Chinese iron ore and steelmaking prices 23/04/2026 Today, iron ore futures showed a weak trend, with the main contract I2609 closing at 783.5 yuan/ton, down 0.32% from the previous trading session. Spot prices have decreased by 0–2 yuan/ton so far. Traders are actively quoing, while steel mills are mostly purchasing for just-in-time needs; overall spot transactions remain limited. According to SMM’s survey, the total inventory across 10 ports this week stands at 11.432 million tons, a decrease of 1.16 million tons from the previous week. Among them, lump ore and high-grade ore saw notable inventory reductions, indicaing solid demand from steel mills for higher iron grades. Given that over 90% of sampled steel mills are operating at high blast furnace utilization rates, the downside support for iron ore prices is expected to remain strong. Furthermore, there has been no further news on whether the previously restricted port inventory will be released, and bearish market seniment is gradually fading. Therefore, iron ore prices are expected to continue their high-level range-bound trend in the near term.
