Under one agreement, Iraq obtained Iran’s approval for two very large crude carriers carrying roughly 2 million barrels of oil each to transit the strait safely on 10 May, Reuters reports. Iraqi officials are now seeking additional approvals for future shipments as Baghdad moves to protect oil revenues, which account for about 95% of the country’s budget. An Iraqi oil ministry official said Iran also has an economic interest in preventing instability in Iraq, describing the two countries as close allies.
