Image Credit: Sofar Ocean Ocean intelligence platform Sofar Ocean has unveiled Wayfinder Explore , a new suite of voyage optimisation tools for shipping that manage routing decisions in-house. The platform gives masters and shore teams access to the same weather and vessel data used by Sofar’s own routing specialists, the firm said in an emailed update today.  Wayfinder Explore allows users to optimise routes, move waypoints, adjust engine inputs such as RPM and compare different voyage options. Fuel use, sailing time and costs are updated as changes are made. The tool also allows routes to be shared between vessels and shore teams, while keeping a record of routing decisions, including the forecast and vessel model used. Explore is built on Sofar’s Wayfinder Core platform and uses the company’s wave forecasts, which are supported by data from its Spotter ocean sensor network. Sofar said vessel performance models are retrained using noon reports and daily weather data. Initial fleet trials of Wayfinder Explore are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter. “Masters and shore teams want autonomy over their routing decisions, and they want to see what each one costs,” Dennis Rong , Head of Product at Sofar Ocean, said.
