The Port of Barcelona has signed a new strategic cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and Shanghai International Port Group, officially establishing a sister port relationship between the two maritime hubs. The agreement was signed by Port of Barcelona President José Alberto Carbonell, SMTC General Director Xiao Hui and SIPG Vice President Yang ZhiYong, in the presence of Jaume Duch, Regional Minister for European Union and Foreign Action, during an institutional and business visit by a Shanghai delegation to Barcelona. The agreement formalises and deepens a collaborative relationship that has been developing over recent years. A preliminary accord was signed in July 2025, followed by a technical visit from Shanghai in September 2025 to advance the development of a Green Shipping and Digital Corridor between the two ports. The current visit included a tour of the Autoterminal vehicle terminal, continuing preparatory work for the corridor’s launch. The cooperation framework covers four principal areas: the digitalisation and security of port operations, the development of green ports and alternative fuels, intermodality, and the promotion of sustainable maritime corridors between the Far East and the Mediterranean. Together these priorities reflect the shared ambition of both ports to position themselves at the forefront of the energy and digital transition in global maritime trade. The agreement consolidates the Port of Barcelona’s role as a Euro-Mediterranean logistics hub and strengthens its ties with one of the world’s leading ports and economic centres, supporting the broader growth of commercial and logistics exchanges between China and Europe.
