One major customer, for example, is applying Rakuten Maritime’s cybersecurity solution from the vessel design stage, demonstrating the value of building security into the ship from the outset rather than bolting it on later. As more major stakeholders adopt this approach, Ryan Son expects the wider industry to follow. However, he stressed that responsibility cannot rest with shipyards alone. Owners also need to build in-house expertise, define their own cybersecurity standards, select suitable providers and communicate those requirements directly to the yard. In the smart-ship era, cybersecurity is no longer something owners can simply leave to the shipbuilder; it is a capability they increasingly need to own themselves.
