According to PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan, initial statements from surviving crew members indicate that the vessel was carrying approximately 55,000 tons of nickel ore when excessive moisture caused the cargo to liquefy and shift to the port side, destabilizing the ship amid rough seas and large waves.
