Four big names in Japanese maritime have debuted a design for a methanol-powered VLCC equipped with rotor sails. Idemitsu Tanker, Iino Kaiun Kaisha, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard have provided details of the 339.5 m long, 309,400 dwt vessel which would also feature a shaft generator. The backers of the new design claim it can achieve a CO2 reduction of more than 40% compared to the reference line against the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulation.
