London 03 Feb, 2026 Reminder: The Dangers of Carrying Nickel Ore Mark Dunbar Surveys Manager Nickel ore cargoes present significant hazards to shipping, with the potential for catastrophic outcomes if not handled properly. Members are reminded that nickel ore, especially when loaded in a wet or untested state, can undergo liquefaction, leading to instability and, in extreme cases, the sudden loss of a vessel. It is crucial for all crew and operators to remain vigilant, adhere strictly to loading protocols, and ensure that all relevant safety measures are followed before, during, and after carriage. Protecting lives and property at sea depends on recognising and respecting these well-documented dangers. Members are responsible for complying with the IMSBC Code and ensuring the safe carriage of nickel ore cargoes from ports in Indonesia and the Philippines.  Members who plan to fix or charter a ship to load nickel ore from ports in Indonesia and the Philippines, or where, under an existing fixture, a ship is ordered to load such cargo, must give mandatory notification to the Club as per Notice to Members No. 13 2017/2018
