LVR Flote has joined the international PILOTech project, a three-year Baltic Sea regional initiative aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from pilot boats and promoting more environmentally friendly pilotage services. The project is co-financed by the Interreg Central Baltic Sea Region Programme with a total budget of EUR€2.7 million, of which EUR€2.2 million comes from European Union funding, and is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2029. The project is led by Tallinn University of Technology and brings together partners from Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden, including LVR Flote, the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Estonian State Fleet, Finnpilot Pilotage Oy and Novia University of Applied Sciences. Over the course of the project, partners will jointly research, test and evaluate innovative low-emission technologies and operational solutions for pilot vessels, maintaining safe and efficient service delivery while reducing their carbon footprint. As part of its contribution, LVR Flote will implement an integrated digital monitoring system to analyse pilot boat operational data, enabling more informed technical and operational decisions aimed at streamlining vessel operations and reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The project also envisages knowledge exchange among pilotage service providers across the Baltic states and the development of joint recommendations for the more sustainable operation of shipping services throughout the Central Baltic Sea region. For the Port of Riga, improved pilot boat efficiency will translate into lower emissions in port waters and cleaner air for residents of Riga and surrounding neighbourhoods.
