The Port of Long Beach has approved US$58.2 million to expand the deployment of zero-emission technologies across its operations. The funding is part of California’s System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT) programme. The initiative supports cleaner freight transportation, improves cargo movement and reduces environmental impacts on surrounding communities. The investment will fund the purchase of 61 zero-emission cargo-handling machines and 21 charging units. It will also support the deployment of six zero-emission harbour craft, five cleaner harbour vessels, and one zero-emission locomotive. The port said the investment supports its goal of becoming the world’s first zero-emission port. “Expanding our clean technology portfolio is critical to the future of goods movement and to the health of the communities around us,” said Dr. Noel Hacegaba, CEO of the Port of Long Beach. “We are shaping the future by deploying the latest zero-emission equipment today.” Frank Colonna, President of the Long Beach Harbor Commission, said the new funding builds on the port’s broader SWIFT programme. He said the investment will accelerate the transition to zero-emission operations while improving the reliability and efficiency of cargo movement.
