Maritime organisations call to include shipping in Electrification Action Plan in International Shipping News 20/06/2026 On July 15, the Commission will publish its Electrification Action Plan (EAP), a crucial opportunity to accelerate electrification across Europe, cut fossil fuel imports, and slash both air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. To maximise this impact, the shipping industry must be fully integrated into the plan. In ports, shoreside electricity is already being deployed to connect ships to local grids, and daily port operations are steadily electrifying. At sea, battery-electric vessels are becoming increasingly viable, with a growing number of electric ferries already sailing European waters. However, significant barriers remain, particularly regarding access to necessary charging infrastructure. T&E, alongside a coalition of shipping companies, asks that shipping is included in the EAP to overcome these hurdles, support efficient and viable technologies, and ensure a resilient, competitive, and electrified maritime economy.
