Stena Line has signed an agreement with the Swedish Transport Administration to continue operating the rail ferry service between Trelleborg and Rostock until 31 December 2031. The agreement secures Sweden’s only regular rail ferry connection with Germany and one of the few remaining rail ferry services in the world. Stena Line has operated the route since 1998 using the ferries Skåne and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . The service provides a vital rail link between Sweden and continental Europe. The rail ferries support freight that cannot travel via the Öresund route because of weight and width restrictions on Danish and German rail infrastructure. The route also serves as a strategic backup if the Öresund Bridge faces prolonged disruptions. The Swedish Transport Administration said the agreement strengthens Sweden’s transport resilience and supports military mobility for the Swedish Armed Forces and NATO. Germany remains Sweden’s largest trading partner, making the rail ferry service an important link for exports and imports. The agreement is the first of its kind between Stena Line and the Swedish Transport Administration.
