COSCO SHIPPING (Qidong) Offshore has delivered the 88,000-cbm CHANG PING YUAN , which China Classification Society (CCS) describes as the first domestically designed and built VLGC under the Chinese flag. The new vessel combines LPG dual-fuel propulsion with energy-saving technologies and intelligent ship systems. It has also been designed to carry ammonia, giving it greater flexibility for the future transport of lower-carbon fuels. Dual-fuel design and energy-saving features CHANG PING YUAN measures 229.9 metres in length and has a design speed of 16.5 knots. Its cargo capacity is provided by four independent Type A tanks, while two additional 300-cbm tanks are installed on deck. The vessel is powered by an LPG dual-fuel main engine and is also equipped with a shaft generator. Its hull design features a plumb stem, while energy-saving ducts and a rudder bulb are intended to improve sailing performance and operational efficiency. Alongside these features, CHANG PING YUAN incorporates an intelligent ship system that meets the requirements of the CCS i-ship (N,M,E,I) notation. Vessel designed to carry ammonia The new VLGC has also been designed with the ability to transport ammonia as cargo. This gives the vessel additional flexibility as demand develops for the seaborne transportation of lower-carbon fuels. CCS was involved throughout the project, working with the shipowner and shipyard from the initial approval stages through detailed design and construction. The classification society organised technical workshops during the project, while its survey team carried out inspections during construction to support compliance with the vessel’s design and safety requirements.
