The Immingham Eastern Ro-Ro Terminal, a joint investment by Associated British Ports and Stena Line at the Port of Immingham, has reached a significant construction milestone with a steel signing ceremony marking the start of marine works. The terminal is expected to reach completion by May 2028. Keir Mather, Minister for Maritime, Aviation and Decarbonisation, officially signed one of the marine piles alongside guests from freight businesses and project partners, signalling the commencement of physical infrastructure delivery for the £200 million-plus freight ferry terminal due to open in 2028. Main contractor Dragados is delivering the marine works package, including installation of the piled berth structure designed to accommodate the next generation of larger RoRo vessels. The project is expected to create approximately 700 jobs during the construction phase and around 200 permanent positions once fully operational. The IERRT will strengthen the Humber Estuary’s role in the UK RoRo freight sector, providing additional capacity to meet growing demand from businesses in the UK and northern Europe while responding to the trend toward larger and more sustainable RoRo vessels requiring expanded port infrastructure and landside space. Andrew Dawes, Regional Director of ABP’s Humber ports, described the terminal as providing much-needed capacity for a growing freight market. Carl-Johan Hellner, COO of Stena Line Ports and Terminals, framed the investment as a direct response to sustained growth in customer demand across the freight network and an expression of confidence in the Humber region’s long-term economic potential. Minister Mather welcomed the project as exactly the kind of ambitious infrastructure investment needed to grow the economy and strengthen the UK’s maritime sector, noting the government’s work with industry to unlock private investment through mechanisms including the National Wealth Fund.
