Everllence has completed an R&D test of what it says is the world’s first G80 ethanol-capable engine . HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine and Machinery Division carried out the test in South Korea. The engine will power the third vessel in a series of 10 Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) ordered by Shandong Shipping. The vessels will be chartered to Brazilian mining and logistics company Vale. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for early 2027. G80 engine offers tri-fuel capability The Everllence B&W ME-LGIMe engine can operate on fuel oil, methanol, ethanol or a blend of methanol and ethanol. “This marks a major milestone for the G80 engine platform,” said Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at Everllence. He said the development transforms the platform into a flexible tri-fuel engine and provides Vale with more options for reducing emissions from its maritime operations. The latest development follows a cooperation agreement signed between Everllence and Vale in February 2026. The agreement focused on developing an ethanol-powered engine based on Everllence’s existing B&W ME-LGIM platform. Everllence sees wider potential for ethanol Everllence said interest in ethanol as a marine fuel has increased over the past five years. The company expects potential demand for the technology from bulk carriers, tankers and container vessels . “The G80 ethanol engine is based on the proven B&W ME-LGIM platform,” said Christian Ludwig, Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Promotion, Two-Stroke Business at Everllence. According to Ludwig, the company has secured more than 250 methanol engine orders, with over 100 units already in service. Alternative-fuel engine portfolio expands The ethanol project adds another fuel option to Everllence’s two-stroke engine portfolio.
