Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has named FUJIN SAILOR , the world’s first LNG carrier equipped with wind-assisted propulsion. The naming ceremony took place on 10 September at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje Shipyard in South Korea. The vessel will be delivered to Chevron under a long-term charter at the end of September 2026. Two Wind Challenger sails FUJIN SAILOR is equipped with two Wind Challenger hard sails . The technology uses wind power to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. According to MOL, FUJIN SAILOR is also the first vessel of any type to use two Wind Challenger units . The vessel is the fourth of 11 MOL Group ships already equipped or scheduled to receive the technology. Molly T. Laegeler, President of Chevron’s Supply & Trading business, formally named the vessel. “FUJIN SAILOR represents the combined efforts of many and demonstrates how practical innovation can help reduce the carbon intensity of LNG transportation,” said Laegeler. Capacity of 174,000 cubic metres FUJIN SAILOR is 294.9 metres long and 46.4 metres wide . The LNG carrier has a membrane-type cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres . It is powered by an ME-GA low-pressure LNG dual-fuel engine. The vessel also features an Air Lubrication System and Shaft Generator . These technologies are designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. MOL expands Wind Challenger fleet MOL plans to expand the use of its Wind Challenger technology across its fleet. The company aims to have 25 vessels equipped with the system by 2030 . That number is expected to increase to 80 by 2035.
