FacebookTwitterEmailLinkedin Samsung Heavy Industries has successfully completed a trans-Pacific demonstration of its artificial intelligence-based autonomous navigation system, the Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS). Installed on a 15,000-TEU container vessel operated by Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine, the system was tested from August 25 to September 6 on a 10,000 km voyage between Oakland, USA, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Developed in 2019, SAS integrates radar, GPS, automatic identification systems (AIS), and camera feeds into a unified platform that enables situational awareness, collision avoidance, and automatic control of engines and rudders. The AI system also monitors the surroundings continuously and adjusts operations based on real-time weather and route analyses.
