The Port of Long Beach has unanimously approved three new clean air strategies in coordination with the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Port of Los Angeles, advancing the shared goal of zero-emissions goods movement at the nation’s largest port complex. The measures, approved as an addendum to the Cooperative Agreement adopted last December, build on the voluntary San Pedro Bay Clean Air Action Plan that has delivered reductions of 90% in diesel particulate matter, 68% in nitrogen oxides and 98% in sulfur oxides from port-related sources since 2005. The three approved strategies comprise US$ 40 million in new funding from the two ports for a regionwide zero-emissions truck charging network extending beyond the port complex into key locations across Southern California, enhancements to existing green ship incentive programmes to encourage calls from the cleanest available oceangoing vessels, and a new programme to further incentivise the deployment of zero-emissions trucks. The Port of Long Beach currently operates 102 charging stations on site, the most of any seaport in the United States, with 92 additional stations coming online later this year. The regionwide charging network will expand this infrastructure into the broader Southern California heavy-duty truck corridor, creating wider benefits beyond port operations. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson described the strategies as accelerating the journey toward cleaner, electrified port operations while growing charging infrastructure that benefits the entire region.
