MMI Daily Iron Ore Index Report January 15 2026 in Chinese iron ore and steelmaking prices 15/01/2026 Today, Dalian iron ore futures trended weakly with noticeable volatility. The benchmark contract I2605 ultimately closed at 813 RMB/tonne, representing a decline of 1.03% from the previous trading day. In the physical market, prices dipped slightly by approximately 2–5 RMB/tonne. Traders displayed relatively high enthusiasm for quoting, yet the overall aƫtude remained cautious, with transactions primarily driven by rigid demand restocking. Consequently, the general trading atmosphere was average. From an inventory perspective, the latest SMM statistics reveal that total iron ore stocks across the ten major ports stood at 115.69 million tonnes for this period, a week-on-week increase of 1.05 million tonnes. Accumulation was observed across all four major varieties, with Lump ore exhibiting the most significant build-up, recording a rise of 3.7%. Although global shipments plummeted by 15.8% at the beginning of the week, the inherent lag caused by the shipping cycle means this bullish factor will take time to filter through to port arrivals. Therefore, pressure from spot supply at ports remains persistent in the short term. On the demand side, while the growth rate of daily average hot metal output has slowed recently, the overall volume remains at a high level. Furthermore, expectations for future upside remain relatively optimistic, providing a solid floor of support for ore prices. Regarding market sentiment, inventories for Rebar and Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) defied the typical off-season trend by falling instead of rising this week. Simultaneously, prices for coking coal and coke remained resilient. These factors provided a degree of sentiment support for the broader ferrous complex, including iron ore. Weighing the current interplay between supply and demand specifically the dual forces of inventory accumulation and rigid demand support—iron ore prices are projected to continue their paƩern of fluctuation at high levels in the short term, with a unilateral breakout appearing unlikely.
