The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority has completed a new outfitting quay at Genoa’s Sestri Ponente shipyard. The project marks the first completed phase of the port’s €440 million expansion programme. The new facility is now fully operational. It features a 315-metre quay and a 15,000-square-metre operational yard. The infrastructure will support the final construction and outfitting of next-generation vessels. The project is part of a wider redevelopment plan. The next phase includes a new 400-metre mega drydock. Once completed, it will be one of the largest and most advanced in the Mediterranean. The €60 million project took 15 months to complete. Construction started in October 2024 and finished in January 2026. Workers completed a new bridge over the Cantarena Creek in March 2026. The project also added a 315-metre utility tunnel for gas and electricity, a new shore power substation, crane runways, quay resurfacing and river protection works. “To comply with the project timetable, we implemented a range of corrective and mitigation measures,” said Marco Vaccari, Chief Director for Large-Scale Engineering Works at the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority. Construction of the mega drydock is now underway. “We are now fully focused on delivering the mega drydock,” said Leo Fortunato, the project’s manager. He said foundation works, dredging, excavation and demolition have progressed in parallel. Construction of the drydock structure has now begun. The port will also deepen the drydock entrance from 9 metres to 11 metres. The upgrade will allow vessels with a 10-metre draft to enter safely. The Port Authority is recycling most of the excavated material. Some will support the construction of Genoa’s New Breakwater. The rest will be reused at the shipyard.
