The Malaysian state of Sabah has decided to acquire a 25% cent stake in Petronas’s $3.1bn FLNG facility set to be deployed in Sipitang, known as ZLNG. The acquisition will be conducted through SMJ Energy, which signed a head of agreement with Petronas. The ZLNG project will have a capacity of 2m tonnes per annum and will be positioned nearshore in Sipitang. The unit is currently under construction and is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2027. Sabah already has two FLNG projects – the 1.2 mtpa PFLNG1 and the 1.5 mtpa PFLNG2. The state government also announced its intention to buy a 40% interest in PFLNG1 through the same company.
