Image Credit: Echandia Maritime battery supplier Echandia has been selected by Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works (KMEW) to supply battery systems for two fully electric harbour tugs for India. The tugs will operate at Visakhapatnam Port Authority and V.O.C Port Authority in Tuticorin , with entry into service planned for the second quarter of 2027 , Echandia said in a statement on its website on Friday .  The two tugs are being built under the Government of India's Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP), which aims to deploy 50 tugs powered by electricity, hydrogen or methanol across India’s major ports by 2030 . The order marks the first deployment of Echandia's recently launched Core battery system in India . Designed for a 15-year service life, the batteries are expected to last the entire concession period, eliminating the need for a mid-life replacement. The company said the deal builds on its presence in India, where its LTO-based battery systems have powered 23 Kochi Water Metro ferries since 2023 .
