Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Buenaventura (SPRBUN) has appointed HPC Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC) to develop a terminal optimization and business development strategy for its multipurpose terminal in Colombia. The study will evaluate how the terminal’s existing infrastructure, cargo-handling equipment and available space can be used more efficiently while identifying growth opportunities in solid bulk, liquid bulk, RoRo and other multipurpose cargo segments. According to the companies, the project will combine terminal planning, market analysis and financial modelling to develop short-, medium- and long-term development scenarios. These will range from operational improvements and better use of existing capacity to phased infrastructure and layout investments. Located on Colombia’s Pacific coast, the Port of Buenaventura handles containers, general cargo, solid bulk, liquid bulk and RoRo cargo. While container traffic remains an important part of the terminal’s business, the study will also examine opportunities to expand non-containerized cargo activities. “Buenaventura is located on Colombia’s Pacific coast and plays a strategic role in the country’s international trade,” said William Angarita, Director of Planning, Projects and Innovation at SPRBUN. “With HPC, we are looking at how our existing assets, cargo mix and operational set-up can support more efficient operations and a stronger position in selected growth areas.” A key element of the study will focus on the solid bulk market, assessing cargo flows and commercial opportunities, while also evaluating the potential for liquid bulk and RoRo operations based on market demand, operational feasibility and investment requirements. HPC previously supported SPRBUN in developing an integrated master plan for the terminal and will build on that work to define future development options.
