Global Ship Lease has agreed contracts for the construction of five additional mid-sized, ultra-high-reefer, wide-beam containerships, expanding its newbuilding programme. The vessels will be built for an aggregate purchase price of approximately US$413 million and are scheduled for delivery during 2029. Upon delivery, all five ships will enter multi-year charter agreements with a TEU-weighted average firm term of 8.1 years. Global Ship Lease expects the vessels to generate approximately US$362 million in Adjusted EBITDA over the initial charter periods, with a further US$131 million possible if charterers exercise all extension options. The latest order increases the company’s newbuilding orderbook to 15 containerships, which are collectively expected to generate more than US$1 billion in Adjusted EBITDA over an average TEU-weighted firm charter period of 7.1 years. George Youroukos, Executive Chairman of Global Ship Lease, said the new vessels would strengthen the company’s long-term earnings profile while reducing the average age of its fleet. He added that the ships’ combination of deployment flexibility, high refrigerated cargo capacity and fuel efficiency positions them to meet the evolving needs of container shipping customers for years to come.
