Image Credit: NYK International Car Operators (ICO) , a unit of the NYK Group , has started operating Belgium 's first shore power facility for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels at the Port of Zeebrugge . The facility entered commercial service this month after successful testing, with an NYK-operated pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) becoming the first vessel to connect, NYK said in a press release on Friday . It also marks the first use of shore power by the NYK Group for a PCTC while at berth. A shore power system allows vessels to switch off auxiliary engines and connect to onshore electricity while docked, lowering bunker fuel use, noise and air pollution. The power is generated by ICO's on-site wind farm. ICO said the project is part of its wider efforts to support port decarbonisation and could be expanded in the future.
