DNV highlights need for regulatory clarity to accelerate maritime decarbonisation in International Shipping News , Interviews 11/06/2026 As the shipping industry continues its transition towards a lower-carbon future, DNV is emphasizing the importance of clear regulations, technical guidance and commercially viable solutions to support the sector’s decarbonisation efforts. Speaking to Hellenic Shipping News, George Teriakidis, Regional Manager Southeast Europe at DNV, noted that while the industry’s commitment to reducing emissions is evident, uncertainty surrounding future global regulations and financing mechanisms remains a significant challenge for investment decisions. According to DNV, decarbonisation will not be achieved through a single fuel or technology. Instead, the industry is expected to rely on a combination of solutions, with shipowners evaluating different pathways based on operational requirements, safety considerations and economic viability. In this evolving landscape, DNV continues to support shipowners, shipyards and industry stakeholders by providing technical expertise, evaluating emerging technologies and assessing the opportunities and challenges associated with alternative fuels and new vessel designs. Teriakidis also highlighted the progress already being made across the industry. Alternative-fuel-capable vessels now represent a growing share of the global fleet, while nearly half of newbuilding orders are designed to operate on fuels beyond conventional oil-based options.
