Image Credit: LR Lloyd’s Register (LR) has completed an independent verification of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for SunRui ’s suction sail technology. The verification was announced at SMM 2026 in Hamburg and covered SunRui’s 6m x 26m suction sail, LR said in a press release on Friday .  LR reviewed the aerodynamic performance and wind load calculations and found that the CFD study followed recognised industry standards, including LR’s Guidance Notes on Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems, IACS Recommendation 173 and relevant ITTC procedures. The study reported a maximum thrust of 260kN from one suction sail and up to 700kN when three sails were simulated together on a ship. LR said independent verification can help shipowners assess new energy-saving technologies and make investment decisions based on reliable performance data.
