Mitsui OSK Lines has unveiled a maintenance robot it has been developing with other Japanese companies including Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The wall climbing robot can help with ship inspections and maintenance work and has received endorsement from Japanese classification society, ClassNK, following a demonstration test. The robot can climb up to high places, take photographs, measure the thickness of steel plates and operate in confined spaces. Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), which has invested more than most lines in research and development of autonomous shipping, is now gearing up to use robots onboard its ships.
