File Image / Pixabay Existing large harbour craft in Singapore are ready to adopt B100 marine biofuel, provided appropriate fuel handling and storage practices are followed, a new study has found. The study released by the Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development Centre of Excellence (MESD) this week assessed B100 use through laboratory testing and sea trials involving a tugboat and bunker tanker. Engines maintained stable performance throughout 200 hours of sea trials, with no significant power loss, unusual fuel consumption trends or critical operational disruptions. B100 also achieved brake thermal efficiency comparable with conventional diesel while producing lower carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions. A modest increase in nitrogen oxide emissions was recorded. The study found antioxidant additives improved oxidation stability, helping reduce the risk of B100 degrading during storage. MESD said the findings demonstrate the “qualified readiness” of Singapore’s existing large harbour craft for B100 adoption, subject to appropriate fuel-handling, storage and additive practices.
