Pilbara Ports has awarded a contract to Melchor Contracting Pty Ltd for the reconstruction of the Utah Ring Road at the Utah Bulk Handling Facility in Port Hedland, under a AU$ 37 million project supported by the Cook Labor Government. The contract marks a significant investment in critical port infrastructure at one of the world’s busiest bulk export hubs. The project involves the reconstruction of approximately two kilometres of existing road, replacing the current asphalt pavement with a high-durability concrete surface designed to support long-term heavy vehicle operations. The Utah Ring Road plays a vital role in facilitating heavy vehicle access and the efficient movement of bulk commodities through the facility. Originally constructed to support approximately 12 million tonnes per annum, the road now facilitates approximately 20 million tonnes annually, resulting in accelerated wear that has necessitated the reconstruction. Works will be delivered in stages over approximately 18 months to ensure the facility remains operational and to minimise disruption to industry throughout the construction period. The project builds on a AUD 32 million upgrade to the eight-kilometre Utah Road link completed by Pilbara Ports last year. Ports and Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson described the contract award as an important milestone in upgrading critical infrastructure supporting Western Australia’s economy, noting that the staged delivery approach will maintain trade continuity while strengthening the long-term resilience of the facility. Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel highlighted the project’s role in delivering safer and more reliable access to a facility central to moving the Pilbara region’s commodities to global markets.
