Maersk has announced several Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) changes for cargo moving from Far East Asia to Latin America. The carrier initially reduced the surcharge for several destinations in early August. However, Maersk will introduce higher levels later in the month. The changes cover Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. PSS increase to Mexico, West Coast South America, Central America and the Caribbean From 22 August 2026, Maersk will increase the PSS for shipments from Far East Asia to the following regions: Mexico West Coast South America Central America Caribbean destinations, excluding Puerto Rico and Colombia The carrier will apply the following amounts: Container size PSS 20-foot containers US$1,000 40-foot containers US$2,000   Meanwhile, the same levels will apply to Puerto Rico and Colombia from 4 September 2026. The surcharge will remain in place until further notice. PSS increase to East Coast South America Maersk will also increase the PSS from Far East Asia to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The new levels will generally take effect on 20 August 2026. However, Maersk lists 22 August 2026 as the effective date for cargo originating in South Korea. Equipment PSS All 20-foot dry containers US$1,000 All 40-foot dry containers US$2,000 45-foot high-cube dry containers US$2,000 20-foot reefer containers US$1,000 40-foot high-cube reefer containers US$2,000 The East Coast South America adjustment covers shipments from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Japan. It also covers Cambodia, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. Thailand, Timor-Leste, Taiwan and Vietnam also fall within the scope. Earlier PSS reduction Before the latest increases, Maersk reduced its PSS from Far East Asia to Mexico, West Coast South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The lower levels took effect on 3 August 2026 for most Far East Asian origins. For South Korean cargo, they took effect on 14 August 2026.
