Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched LR RouteFlex , a new application designed to give containership operators more flexibility in stowage planning. The tool uses metocean data to calculate weather-dependent factors for individual routes. It allows operators to adjust stowage plans when voyage conditions or routes change. LR developed the application as container shipping faces more frequent route diversions caused by weather, geopolitical events, port congestion and other disruptions. RouteFlex adapts stowage plans to voyage changes Traditional stowage planning often relies on assumptions established for a predefined route. RouteFlex instead allows operators to optimise container stowage stack by stack and leg by leg using metocean data from different trading regions. If a vessel changes route, operators can recalculate the relevant weather-dependent factors and assess how the diversion affects its stowage arrangements. The application’s route splitting function also allows individual legs of a voyage to be optimised separately. “Optimal stowage is no longer just about maximising capacity. It is about flexibility, resilience and the ability to adapt safely when conditions change,” said Nick Gross, Global Containerships Segment Director at Lloyd’s Register. Instead of applying worst-case weather assumptions across an entire voyage, operators can assess conditions for individual route legs.
